Who Is “Nephew”?
While many know him by the name Nephew, Trey Robertson explains that the nickname carries a much deeper meaning.

Never Empty. Praise Him Everywhere.
The name was born while he was serving time in prison and has since become his identity and life’s mission.
Today, Nephew spends his time encouraging youth, speaking at events, visiting prisons, mentoring individuals reentering society, and spreading hope throughout Houston.
Growing Up in Houston’s Copper Tree Apartments
Trey grew up in Houston’s Copper Tree Apartments, an environment surrounded by violence, crime, and instability.
As a child, he believed the chaos around him was normal.
Instead of having positive role models steering him in the right direction, many adults around him unintentionally normalized destructive behavior.
Like many young people growing up in difficult environments, he accepted the lifestyle because it was all he knew.
When Pride Changed Everything
One moment changed the course of his life forever.
During an altercation fueled by pride and ego, Trey was shot in the stomach.
The same bullet exited his body and struck his mother.
Within seconds, multiple people were injured.
Hearing his mother’s cries while lying wounded became the turning point that forced him to confront the direction his life was heading.
He made a promise to God that if given another chance, he would dedicate his life to something greater than himself.
The Cost of Crime
Eventually, Trey was arrested for robbery.
His sentence led to eight consecutive years in prison.
Looking back, he says prison didn’t simply cost him his freedom.
It cost him precious years with his children, missed family memories, relationships, and moments that can never be replaced.
One lesson he shares repeatedly is:
Sin will take you farther than you wanted to go, keep you longer than you wanted to stay, and cost you more than you wanted to pay.
That lesson has become the foundation of every youth presentation he gives today.
Why Second Chances Matter
After his release, Trey faced another challenge that many formerly incarcerated individuals experience—earning people’s trust.
He understands why employers, organizations, and communities can be hesitant.
One person’s poor decisions often create barriers for everyone who comes afterward.
Instead of becoming discouraged, he chose to let his actions speak louder than his past.
Today, he actively mentors individuals transitioning back into society and reminds them that rebuilding trust takes consistency, accountability, and patience.
Guard Your Gates
One of the most memorable lessons from the interview is Trey’s advice about “guarding your gates.”
He explains that your gates are your senses:
- What you watch
- What you listen to
- What you say
- Who you spend time around
- What influences your daily decisions
According to Trey, protecting these gates helps protect your future.
The people, music, environments, and habits you allow into your life often shape the direction you eventually take.
A Message Every Teenager Needs to Hear
If Trey could speak directly to young people heading down the same road he once traveled, his message would be simple:
You don’t have to chase fast money.
You don’t have to prove yourself.
You don’t have to follow the crowd.
Instead, he encourages young people to start businesses, develop skills, seek mentors, and create opportunities legally.
His belief is that success earned honestly lasts much longer than success built on crime.
Ministry Instead of Misery
Today, Trey travels throughout Houston serving communities through:

- Prison ministry
- Halfway house mentoring
- Volunteer projects
- Community speaking engagements
- Faith-based encouragement
Rather than allowing prison to become his identity, he uses it as a testimony to inspire others before they make the same mistakes.
