Education is more than grades, tests, and graduation. It is about growth, confidence, overcoming challenges, discovering your purpose, and preparing for the future.
In a powerful conversation on The TLC Show, host Aaliyah Lychail sat down with three young students — Rolanda, Brooklyn, and Litzyanne — for an honest discussion about the realities of high school, friendships, mental health, education, and the importance of investing in the next generation.
The conversation highlighted what many students experience but do not always have the opportunity to discuss openly: academic pressure, finding the right support system, overcoming challenges, and learning how to believe in themselves.
Students Share Their Real High School Experiences
When asked to describe their high school experience in one word, the students gave different perspectives that showed how unique every student’s journey can be.
For some, high school has been enjoyable and filled with memorable moments. For others, it has been stressful because of academic pressure, exams, and the challenges of balancing responsibilities.
One major topic discussed was the pressure students feel when it comes to maintaining good grades.
“Three weeks come fast, and when you fall behind, you fall behind,” one student shared while explaining how quickly academic challenges can build up.
The students emphasized the importance of staying focused, asking for help, and not allowing setbacks to define their future.
Overcoming Academic Challenges and Learning to Keep Going
Many students experience moments where they feel overwhelmed or want to give up. During the conversation, the students opened up about those difficult moments and how they pushed through.
One student discussed struggling during a challenging school year but learning that perseverance and determination were necessary to reach their goals.
Another student shared how improving their GPA became a personal accomplishment and reminded them that hard work pays off.
The message was clear:
Challenges are part of the journey, but giving up should never be the answer.
The Importance of Positive Friendships and Support Systems
Friendships play a major role in the high school experience, and the students shared valuable advice about choosing the right people to surround themselves with.
The group discussed the importance of keeping a small circle and being careful about the influences around them.
“Keep your circle small,” one student explained, emphasizing that not everyone who is around you truly supports your growth.
The students encouraged others to stay true to themselves and avoid changing who they are just to fit in.
Why Student Support Matters
A major part of the discussion focused on what students need from schools, teachers, families, and communities.
The students explained that success requires teamwork between educators, parents, and students.
They highlighted the importance of teachers who genuinely care, check in with students, and create a safe environment where young people feel comfortable asking for help.
One student shared how having a supportive teacher helped them grow academically and personally.
Another student explained how encouragement from family and educators helped them improve their reading skills and prepare for their future career goals.
Preparing Students for Their Future Careers
The students also discussed how schools can better prepare young people for life after graduation.
They expressed interest in more hands-on opportunities, career programs, and classes that connect education with real-world skills.
From culinary arts to cosmetology and entrepreneurship, the students shared that young people need opportunities to explore their passions early.
One student explained that career preparation should begin before college so students have a clearer understanding of their goals.
Mental Health and Creating Safe Spaces for Students
Mental health was another important topic during the conversation.
The students discussed the importance of having teachers and mentors who recognize when students may be struggling emotionally.
They shared that sometimes students may not feel comfortable speaking up, even when support is available.
Creating safe spaces, checking in with students, and showing compassion can make a major difference.
As one student explained, sometimes students simply need someone to ask:
“Are you okay?”
Students Speak Out Against Bullying
The conversation also addressed bullying and the impact it can have on young people.
The students agreed that bullying is harmful and can affect someone’s confidence, mental health, and overall well-being.
They encouraged students who experience bullying to speak up and seek support.
The message from the students was powerful:
No one should feel alone, and everyone deserves to feel respected.
Finding Healthy Ways to Manage Stress
Every student needs healthy ways to handle pressure.
During the conversation, the students shared their personal methods for managing stress.
For some, cooking and baking became a way to relax and express creativity.
For others, self-care activities helped them recharge and feel confident.
The students showed that finding positive outlets is an important part of maintaining balance.
